  An unrestored section of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. You are looking at the gateless chamber of lock 33, with the substantial limestone structure of the 'bypass flume' on the right. These culverts are designed for overflow water to bypass the lock but over the years they have been unable to prevent repeated damage from the flooding Potomac.
